A man named Dempsey was executed by hanging in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, in June 1823, in front of a large crowd, according to a correspondent's account reprinted from the Norfolk Herald. He was taken from the jail to the gallows in a cart, and a minister preached at the scene. He called his wife and several acquaintances to him and urged them to seek salvation, saying his soul had been converted thirteen days earlier. The account reports that the first rope broke, he fell to the ground, and he was hanged again after a short interval.
