A Black man held in the custody of officers at Hernando, Mississippi, was taken from them by a masked mob and killed, according to a July 1880 report in the Brenham Weekly Banner that cites an unnamed source. Citizens of the area later held a mass meeting and passed resolutions condemning the killing.
