Died in jail or a lockup
Name not reported
A Black man held at the Bowling Green jail was taken from the jail in 1883 by a mob of several hundred men, who hanged him with a rope near town. Six men armed with pistols demanded the jail keys, and the jailer handed them over. The mob had first believed another man responsible for the offense it was pursuing, and that belief was later thought to be mistaken. Whether the man they hanged was the man they had been seeking is unresolved.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
