A Black man was held in the Jacksonville city jail in Florida in September 1919 when a mob of about fifty men stormed the building and took him and another Black man from it shortly after midnight on September 8. The crowd drove the two men to the edge of the city, shot them, and dragged their bodies through the streets, leaving one in front of a hotel. The mob had been looking for a third man, who had already been moved to St. Augustine. The sheriff and a posse searched for members of the mob, and no arrests had yet been reported.
