A Black boy of about 13 was held in the Shelbyville jail in Kentucky in October 1901. A mob broke into the jail and took him that morning. The mob lynched him along with another teenager, within about 300 yards of the jail. The jailer refused to surrender the keys, and the mob battered the doors down.
