A Black man, whose name is not given, was held in the Nashville jail in 1875 when a crowd broke into the building and took him out, according to a New York Herald report reprinted in the Memphis Daily Appeal. The crowd carried him to a bridge and tried to hang him. The rope is said to have broken, and he fell about ninety feet onto rocks and into the water, where shots were fired at him before his body sank. The paper called the killing cowardly and brutal, and noted that he was in custody and showed no sign of trying to escape.
