A man held in the jail at Richmond was taken out by an armed mob on the morning of July 18, 1879, and hanged from a tree by the roadside. The Memphis Daily Appeal reported the killing in a brief dispatch the following day. The newspaper attributes the hanging to the armed mob that took him from the jail.
