Name not reported
In the week before September 23, 1897, a crowd of citizens took one of five people held at the jail in Versailles, Indiana, out of the jail one night and hanged them from a tree. The person was in custody at that jail when the crowd took them, so the death is a killing by a mob taken from custody. The Marietta Journal described the crowd as citizens and reported that all five taken from the jail were hanged that night.
