A 69-year-old man died on March 29, 2020, at a hospital after about two months held in the Orange County Jail in Santa Ana. According to the Orange County Sheriff's Department and District Attorney Todd Spitzer, he had a medical condition that affected his breathing and tested negative for COVID-19, so they said his death was not linked to the coronavirus outbreak. Public defender Sharon Petrosino said he was a former combat Marine and prisoner of war who had post-traumatic stress disorder, and that her office had been working to get him released. The district attorney said he died of preexisting health problems, while the public defender's office's account of his need for release was not disputed in the reporting.
