True was held in the jail at Hiawatha, Kansas, in November 1892. A mob of masked men broke into the jail, took him from custody, hanged him from a tree and shot his body, according to a December newspaper report. A brief telegraphic report dates the killing to the night of November 28, 1892, and describes him as Black. Neither report says whether the jail officers or the sheriff resisted the mob, gave up the keys, or handed him over.
