Sharona Carroll

39 years old · died June 11, 2019 · Spokane County Jail, Spokane County, Washington

Sharona Carroll, 39, died in her cell on the third floor of the Spokane County Jail in the early hours of June 11, 2019, after her cellmate called for help. Her brother said she was his protector and would help him when he was homeless, and her mother said she had the biggest heart and would give the shoes off her feet. Jail staff gave her naloxone, but she remained unresponsive and was pronounced dead. Mike Sparber, interim director of Spokane County Detention Services, said a drug overdose might have caused the death, while the medical examiner has not ruled until toxicology results return. Her family was reluctant to believe she overdosed and said she had complained for months about her medical care in jail.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (disputed; neglect alleged). Sheriff's officials say a possible drug overdose caused the death, pending toxicology, while her family doubts she overdosed and says she complained for months about her medical care in jail.

Reported by: Mike Sparber, interim director of Spokane County Detention Services (the agency that held her); her family.
