Samuel Lewis
Samuel Lewis, a Black man, was held in the jail at Atlanta, Georgia, in April 1883, according to newspaper dispatches printed that month. The reports say a mob of about seventy-five people took him from custody on the night of April 9 and hanged him. The papers disagree on the place: one dispatch names the jail at Amberson's Station, Alabama, and another says he was taken from a guard at Ambersden, Cherokee County. None of the sources say whether jail staff resisted the mob or handed over the keys.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
Reported by: The Weekly Democratic Statesman, citing Atlanta and Montgomery dispatches (reporters); The Daily Dispatch, citing an Atlanta dispatch (reporters); Daily Los Angeles Herald report of Atlanta dispatch (reporters).
