Died in jail or a lockup
Ryan
Ryan was held in the jail at Audubon, Iowa, in early February 1885. A dispatch reprinted in the St. Landry Democrat on February 14, 1885, reports that a mob took him from the jail and lynched him. The dispatch is the only account of his death, and it does not say whether the jailer or sheriff resisted the mob, gave up the keys, or handed him over.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A dispatch cited by the St. Landry Democrat says Ryan, confined in the jail at Audubon, was also lynched, but the report is unconfirmed.
