On the morning of December 27, 1858, a mob of thirty or forty men demanded the keys, and the sheriff and his deputy could not stop them from breaking into the jail and taking him from it. According to a Minnesota Statesman letter reprinted in the New Orleans Daily Crescent, the mob tore down the end wall, took him out of the village and hanged him from a tree, lowering him once when the noose was loose.
