Ricky D. Martin
Ricky D. Martin, 24, was held at Santa Rosa Correctional Institution in Florida when he was found injured in his cell in March 2012, with his hands and feet bound, according to Corrections1. He was taken to a hospital in Pensacola and died there; the Florida Department of Corrections recorded his death as April 8, 2012, and listed the manner of death as homicide. Authorities attribute his death to an assault by his cellmate, and a Santa Rosa County jury later found that cellmate guilty of first-degree murder. A 2015 Naples Daily News report, citing reports about the case, said Martin had repeatedly asked for protection and that officials had housed him with the cellmate despite more than 30 disciplinary reports involving that man.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). The Florida Department of Corrections and investigators say another inmate beat him to death, and the Miami Herald reports that he pleaded for protection after being labeled a snitch and was placed with the inmate who later killed him despite more than 30 disciplinary reports.
