Died in jail or a lockup
Richard Dixon
Richard Dixon, a Black man, was held in the Clark County jail in Springfield, Ohio, in early March 1904. Newspaper accounts report that a mob broke into the jail on the Monday night of March 7, took him from his cell and shot him to death in the jail yard. His body was then hung from a telegraph pole and fired upon for about half an hour. The accounts differ on whether the sheriff, turnkey and deputies were overpowered or gave in to the crowd's demand, and one paper said the sheriff had told deputies they could defend the building.
