Phillip Munroe

died January 27, 2025 · Gwinnett County Detention Center, Gwinnett County, Georgia

Phillip Munroe was held at the Gwinnett County Jail in Georgia, and his family says his mental illness worsened there and that he stopped eating. He was moved to a behavioral health facility a couple of times but was returned to the jail, and a guard found him dead in his cell alone in January 2025. The medical examiner listed starvation as the cause of death, and the family, who says he weighed over 200 pounds at intake and about 130 pounds at death, plans a wrongful death lawsuit. His mother, Maureen Chesnut, said she called nearly everyone she could think of for help, and his father, Ronald Chesnut, said the family wants answers. The county declined to comment on pending litigation, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is overseeing the case.
