Peter Vinegard
Peter Vinegard was held in the Lawrence jail in Kansas when a mob took him out and hanged him from the railway bridge on June 10, 1882, according to a press report from that year. The sheriff offered what resistance he could before giving way to the crowd. A 2022 account in The Lawrence Times places the hanging at the Kansas River bridge in the early morning and says more than 100 white men took three Black men from the Douglas County Jail. No one in the mob was ever charged, and his body was buried in an unmarked grave until his name was found in a 2021 cemetery plot chart.
