Pedro Palacios
Pedro Xavier Martinez Palacios Jr. was taken from the Pima County jail to St. Mary's Hospital on January 10, 2022, and was declared brain-dead four days later. An incident report relays his cellmate's account that he took counterfeit pills containing fentanyl over several days and suffered severe withdrawal symptoms while held at the jail. The Tucson Sentinel later reported that he died of an overdose in February 2022 after he was found in need of medical assistance in his cell, and that officials did not announce the death for 10 days. That report places his death a month after the January hospital declaration, and says a press release misspelled his name and gave the wrong age.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose. A cellmate told a jail incident report that he took counterfeit pills containing fentanyl over several days and suffered severe withdrawal in the jail.
