Nathan Carman
Nathan Carman, 29, died on June 15, 2023, in his single cell at the Cheshire County Jail in Keene, New Hampshire, where he was held pretrial. A guard found him unresponsive during rounds in the early morning, and he was the only occupant of the cell. Officials said the death was not considered suspicious and that the cause and manner would be determined by the state medical examiner, and some officials and sources familiar with the investigation said they believed he had died by suicide, while his lawyers said there was no suicide note and that he had seemed upbeat in their daily contact and that they struggled to accept that finding. His lawyer said the medical examiner indicated he had hanged himself, a result the lawyer said he could not understand, and his lawyer said he had Asperger's Syndrome and planned to pay for his funeral and burial.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed). The New Hampshire Department of Justice said the death was not suspicious based on the autopsy, while his lawyer said the medical examiner indicated he hanged himself, a result the lawyers dispute and say they struggle to accept.
Reported by: New Hampshire Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (medical examiner or coroner); Martin Minnella, his lawyer (family or their lawyers); Unnamed officials, as reported in news accounts; Boston Globe, citing sources familiar with the investigation (reporters).
