Mrs. J. T. Orr

died August 10, 1898 · Monroe County Jail, Monroe County, Arkansas

Mrs. J. T. Orr, the wife of John T. Orr, a Clarendon hardware merchant who was shot and killed at his home in July 1898, died in a cell of the Clarendon county jail, where she had been held. Several newspaper accounts say she took poison herself, and her death is reported as a suicide. The accounts place her death before a mob took four people from the same jail on August 10, 1898, but they do not agree on the exact date of her death and give no further account of how she came to be in the cell.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide. Accounts say Mrs. Orr, widow of murdered merchant John T. Orr, took poison herself in her Clarendon county jail cell.

Reported by: Little Rock dispatch (reporters); The Monticellonian (reporters).
