Moses

Henry County, Alabama

Moses was held in the jail at Abbeville, Alabama, when a crowd took him from the jail and burned him at a stake. The Eufaula Native, reprinted in The Western Democrat in February 1857, estimated the crowd at 4,000 to 5,000 people. That account says the sheriff offered no opposition and that the site had been prepared in advance. The account is the only source given for these details, and it reports the killing secondhand.
