Michael Powers

died May 29, 1820 · Court Street Jail, Suffolk County, Massachusetts

Michael Powers was an Irish-born laborer who had lived in the United States for some years and supported himself respectably through his work, according to a Richmond Enquirer account published in June 1820. He was held at the jail in Court-street in Boston, and on May 29, 1820, he was taken by wagon, accompanied by a Catholic priest, the high sheriff of Suffolk and deputies, to Boston Neck, where he was hanged under a sentence of the court. The account says he was attentive to his appearance, remained composed, and spoke a farewell to the spectators, and that few people attended because the hour was early.
