Martin MacNeill
Martin Joseph MacNeill was a former doctor and Mormon bishop from Pleasant Grove, Utah, and the father of eight children, according to The Washington Post. He was found unresponsive on the morning of Sunday, April 9, 2017, in an outdoor yard near a greenhouse at the Olympus Facility of the Utah State Prison in Draper, and was pronounced dead at the facility. The Department of Corrections said there were no obvious signs of foul play, and a Unified Police final report released in July 2017 concluded he died by suicide, a conclusion his lawyers had suspected from the start. His lawyers pointed to two earlier serious suicide attempts in custody, people who knew him said he had been suicidal since entering prison, and the Deseret News reported that the area where he died had no camera coverage.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide. The Unified Police final report concludes he died by suicide, and his lawyers also suspect suicide, while the Department of Corrections says there are no signs of foul play.
Reported by: Unified Police Department (outside investigators); Utah Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); MacNeill's lawyers (family or their lawyers).
