died May 21, 1911 · Columbia County Jail, Columbia County, Florida

Six Black men held at the Lake City county jail in Columbia County, Florida, were taken from the jail in the early morning of May 21, 1911. A group of more than a dozen men posing as officers showed a bogus telegram to the sheriff's 16-year-old son, who was left in charge while the sheriff was away, and he released them into the group's hands. The men were driven about a mile outside town, made to stand together, and shot until all six were dead. The newspaper accounts differ on details, including whether the men were to be hanged before they were shot.
