Levi
Levi was held in the jail at Versailles, Ripley County, Indiana, when a mob of several hundred men took him from it in September 1897. According to an Osgood correspondent's report, masked men demanded the keys from the jailer's household and forced the jailer to open the cells, and Levi was shot and then hanged from an elm tree on the public square. The coroner said he died from blows and shots, while The Hartford Herald, reprinting a Versailles dispatch, said he was shot through the heart in his cell. Relatives and friends said the mob acted hastily, and Governor Mount's telegram ordered the sheriff to pursue those involved in the killings.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A news report from the Osgood correspondent says masked men took Levi from the Versailles jail, shot him through the chest and hanged him, and the coroner's findings list blows and shots.
