Kristan died in May 2022 while held at the Harris County Jail in Texas. Her mother, Deborah Smith, said Kristan died of complications from diabetes. Smith has spoken publicly about losing her daughter and said that grief is what drives her to speak out. She also said families have contacted her about abuses their own loved ones suffered in custody.
