Kepler
Kepler was held at the county jail in Nevada, Missouri, when a mob of about 250 men from Barton County came on January 22, 1892, and demanded that the sheriff hand him over. The sheriff resisted, but the mob broke in the door, and after the sheriff had moved Kepler to an outhouse, the mob found him there and took him. According to a Republic special dispatch reprinted by the St. Louis Telegraph, the men took Kepler by train toward Lamar and hanged him in the courthouse yard there. The jail's sheriff and the men who took Kepler are named in the dispatch only as a mob and a sheriff, and no other officers are described as acting.
