Jowell Travis Legendre
Jowell Travis Legendre, 34, died on August 24, 2023, while held at Red Onion State Prison in Wise County, Virginia. He was found unresponsive in his cell and was taken to Dickenson Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Prison staff first said he had fallen from the top of a bunk bed, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections, but in May 2024 a grand jury indicted his cellmate for aggravated murder, alleging he killed him.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody. A grand jury indicted his cellmate for aggravated murder, and the cellmate had first told guards that Legendre fell from the top bunk.
