Joshua Svwin Jenkins

33 years old · died April 15, 2018 · Lee Correctional Institution, Lee County, South Carolina

Joshua Svwin Jenkins, 33, was one of seven men killed during fights that lasted more than seven hours at Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, South Carolina, on April 15, 2018. The South Carolina Department of Corrections said the fights were altercations between people held in three housing units and that no staff were injured. The Lee County coroner, Larry Logan, said most of the dead had been stabbed or slashed and the rest appeared to have been beaten, and he ruled Joshua's death a homicide from blood loss caused by multiple stab and incised wounds. The Department of Corrections and the State Law Enforcement Division are investigating who committed the killings, and officials attributed the violence to gang rivalry and contraband cell phones.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody. The state Department of Corrections and Lee County Coroner Larry Logan attributed the death to inmate-on-inmate violence during a prison riot, with the coroner ruling it a homicide from stab and incised wounds.
