Jose Manuel Azurdia Hernandez
Jose Manuel Azurdia Hernandez, 54, was held in immigration detention at the Adelanto Detention Facility in San Bernardino County, California. According to a 2018 report by the American Civil Liberties Union, Detention Watch Network, Human Rights Watch and National Immigrant Justice Center, a nurse ignored clear symptoms of a heart attack and refused to see him. He reached the hospital about two hours after his symptoms began, and his heart was too damaged to recover, so he died there four days later. Independent physicians who reviewed the case agreed that delays in care contributed to his death.
