John Wolfenhoigei
John Wolfenhoigei was held in the Granger County jail at Rutledge, Tennessee, after being wounded when he was captured. According to a Knoxville dispatch printed in the Brookhaven Leader on April 11, 1889, citizens surrounded the jail overnight, and by the next day about half the county's adult men had gathered in Rutledge. The report says the jail was broken open, he was taken out, and a crowd hanged him. The account names the crowd as the people who took and killed him, and the claim comes from that newspaper report.
