John Walker

died November 7, 1910 · jail at Oglethorpe, Macon County, Georgia

John Walker was held in the jail at Oglethorpe, Georgia, in November 1910. A mob forcibly took him from the jail, and one account says they took the keys from the only jail employee they could find. Accounts say he was hanged: one reports his body was found the next morning from a telegraph pole in the Flint River swamps, near the body of William Barnes. Another newspaper account says he was hanged from an iron bridge instead, so where he was killed is disputed.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took John Walker from the Oglethorpe jail and hanged him, with the jail's only employee handing over the keys, though one account places the hanging at an iron bridge rather than a telegraph pole.
