John Veazey
John Veazey was a Black man held in the jail at Warrenton, Georgia. In February 1911 a mob broke the locks of the jail, took him out and carried him to the edge of town, where, according to The Palatka News and Advertiser, they hanged him and shot him many times. The Daytona Daily News reported that the sheriff and deputies had left the jail during the night to look for another man connected to the case, while the Palatka paper said the sheriff was out of the city and the mob met no resistance. The Palatka account says his body went unclaimed and was sent to an Atlanta medical college.
