John Ramirez
John Henry Ramirez, 38, was executed by lethal injection at the state penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas, on October 5, 2022. In his final words he expressed love for his wife, his son and his friends, and his spiritual adviser, Dana Moore, kept a hand on his chest and prayed for him until Ramirez said "Amen." Before his execution, Ramirez challenged prison rules that barred his pastor from touching him and praying aloud, and that challenge led to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that states must accommodate such requests during executions. A district attorney asked a judge to withdraw the death warrant, but the execution went ahead.
