John Grant
John Grant, a Black man, was held in a jail near Winona, Mississippi, and on the night of Saturday, April 30, 1898, a mob of masked men took him from the jail by force. According to The Grenada Sentinel, the men carried him about three miles north of Winona to the Illinois Central railroad, where they hanged him from a signboard at a switch. The Macon Beacon gives the same account and places the hanging at Sawyer's switch, but neither source says whether jail officers resisted the mob or handed him over. Citizens of Winona were reported to be considerably indignant at the lynching.
