Died in jail or a lockup
John D. Haggles
John D. Haggles was held in a jail in California when, in the early hours of a Sunday morning in July 1892, about forty armed, masked men came for him. The Macon Beacon reported that the men forced the jailer to open the sheriff's office safe to get the jail keys, while the sheriff and deputy were asleep at home. The men took him to a railroad wood shed and hanged him from a beam. His death is recorded as a lynching by a mob that took him from the jail's custody.
