Jim Shoults

died October 1907 · Tunica County, Mississippi

Jim Shoults, a Black man, was held in a Mississippi jail in Tunica in October 1907 when a mob took him out early one morning and hanged him. One account says his body was found hanging from a telephone pole, while another places the hanging at a telegraph pole in front of the depot, alongside other men taken from the jail. The sheriff said he and his deputies did not know when the men were taken and believed the captors had used jail keys. A coroner's inquest did not assign responsibility for the lynching.
