Died in jail or a lockup
Jim Jones
Jim Jones was held in the jail in Houston, Mississippi, in early February 1913. In the early morning of February 7, a mob broke down the jail door, took him from the building and hanged him from a telephone pole just outside, where his body was left. Reports also said other Black people under arrest were threatened and that Black residents armed themselves, fearing a race conflict. The sheriff later asked the governor to send troops to the town.
