Jeff Pendleton

26 years old · died March 13, 2016 · Hillsborough County Corrections Center, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire

Jeff Pendleton, 26, of Nashua, died in his cell at the Hillsborough County Correctional Facility, also called the Valley Street jail, in Manchester on March 13, 2016. The Hillsborough County Department of Corrections said staff found him unconscious and that emergency treatment failed to save him. The ACLU of New Hampshire described him as a defender of constitutional rights who brought two cases challenging unconstitutional treatment of people without money, and said, "We will deeply miss Jeff." A Concord Monitor report said he had worked low-wage fast-food jobs and joined a Fight for $15 demonstration, and his lawyer called him "really sweet" and "kind." The autopsy found no natural disease or physical trauma, additional tests were ordered, and no cause or manner of death had been determined at the time of reporting.

Cause of death, as reported: Cause not yet determined. The deputy chief medical examiner, Dr. Jenny Duval, said the autopsy found no natural disease or physical trauma and ordered additional tests, so the cause remains undetermined.

Reported by: Dr. Jenny Duval, deputy chief medical examiner for New Hampshire (medical examiner or coroner).
