Jeancarlo Jimenez Joseph
Jean Jimenez-Joseph, 27, was held in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Stewart Detention Center, a privately operated facility in Stewart County, Georgia. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that he had a history of mental illness and had been placed on suicide watch. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said he hanged himself in his cell on May 15, 2017, using a sheet tied to a sprinkler head, and that it found no foul play. Video the GBI reviewed shows that private detention officers missed required cell checks in the hours before he was found, and that one officer logged visits that never happened. His family's attorney says the missed checks may have made the death preventable.
