James Pierce, 26, of Plainville, died at the Gordon County Jail in Georgia in mid-October 2026. According to the sheriff's office, jail staff found him unresponsive in his cell early on a Thursday morning, and emergency medical personnel responded but he did not survive. The sheriff's office said jail staff found him before EMS was called, and it has asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to conduct an independent investigation, which is ongoing.
