James Milligan

died July 5, 1858 · Gentry County

James Milligan was held in the jail at Albany, in Gentry County, when a mob took him from the civil officers and hanged him from a tree on July 5, 1858, according to a St. Joseph newspaper quoting a traveler. The account says a guard of citizens had been posted around the jail, and that the mob acted after the county court declined to pay for that guard. Before he died, Milligan asked to be baptized and the request was granted; his father met him at the stream, a meeting the account describes as affecting. The report is secondhand, carried by the Memphis Daily Appeal.
