Jakelin

died December 8, 2018 · El Paso

Jakelin was a young girl from Guatemala who crossed into the United States with her father in December 2018, near a remote outpost in New Mexico. She was held in federal immigration custody, became ill, and was taken to a hospital in El Paso, where she died on December 8, 2018. The medical examiner, Mario A. Rascon, attributed her death to a rapidly progressive infection in an autopsy report. Earlier, Customs and Border Protection statements had attributed the death to dehydration, shock and liver failure, and her family's lawyers say the report leaves questions about whether medical care came in time.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed). The medical examiner attributed the death to a rapidly progressive infection, while earlier Customs and Border Protection statements blamed dehydration, shock and liver failure.

Reported by: Mario A. Rascon, the medical examiner (medical examiner or coroner); Customs and Border Protection (the agency that held her).
