Jah'Corey Tyson

23 years old · died July 4, 2015 · DeKalb County Jail, DeKalb County, Georgia

Jah'Corey Tyson, 23, was held at the DeKalb County Jail in Georgia, where he was killed by his cellmate on July 4, 2015, according to sheriff's deputies and police. He was a father of three, and his mother says her grandchildren no longer have a father. His mother says he screamed for help and pressed the cell buzzer during the attack and believes jailers failed to respond, and family members say other people held in the unit tried to get help for him. Documents obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution claim the cellmate used a sharpened toothbrush to fatally wound him, and he was taken to DeKalb Medical Center, where he died. The sheriff's office conducted an internal administrative review, and in 2024 the court documents' case against the cellmate was described as inactive while a separate conviction was under appeal.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). Police say his cellmate killed him at the DeKalb County jail, and his mother says jailers did not respond when he pressed the cell buzzer and screamed for help.

Reported by: DeKalb County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); DeKalb Police Department (outside investigators); Atlanta Journal-Constitution court documents (reporters); his mother; other people held in the unit.
