Hines
Hines was held in the jail at Charleston, West Virginia, in January 1876. Newspaper accounts of the time differ on how he was taken: one says about fifty citizens demanded him and the jail handed him over, while another says a mob broke in, overpowered the guard and took him from his cell. Both say the crowd carried him into the woods, and a third report, which puts the crowd at about 400, says he was hanged there. The reports do not agree on whether the jail staff resisted the mob.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A news dispatch reports that a mob broke into the Charleston jail, overpowered the guard, took Hines from his cell and hanged him in the woods.
