Henry Williams
Henry Williams, a Black man, was held by officers at the Colquitt County courthouse in Georgia in June 1921. As the officers brought him out of the upper floor of the courthouse toward a special train meant to take him to another town for safekeeping, a mob seized him from their custody. The Americus Times-Recorder reported in January 1922 that he was chained to a stump and burned to death. A petition by citizens of Colquitt County claims that Colquitt County police chief J. O. Stewart took part in the lynching, a claim reported as the petitioners' account.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A petition by Colquitt County citizens, as reported by the Americus Times-Recorder, says a mob took Henry Williams from officers as they left the courthouse and burned him chained to a stump, and accuses police chief J. O. Stewart of taking part.
Reported by: Petition by a number of citizens of Colquitt County, as reported by the Americus Times-Recorder (family or their lawyers).
