Henry Schulter

24 years old · died September 9, 1897 · Ripley County Jail, Ripley County, Indiana

Henry Shutor Jr. was one of five men held in the Ripley County jail at Versailles, Indiana, in September 1897. According to a newspaper report, a mob of several hundred men forced the jailer to open the cells, took the five men out, and killed them. The Hopkinsville Kentuckian reported that the men were hanged from an elm tree about a hundred yards away, while The Hartford Herald reported that he was struck on the head with a heavy stick in his cell. Governor Mount reportedly ordered the sheriff to pursue everyone involved, and a newspaper reported that public sentiment favored the mob, though observers doubted any investigation would lead to convictions.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). An Osgood correspondent's news report and Governor Mount's telegram say a mob hanged Henry Shutor Jr. from an elm tree after taking him from the jail, while a Hartford Herald report, reprinting a Versailles dispatch, says he was struck on the head with a heavy stick in his cell.
