Germaine Gillespie

29 years old · died June 29, 2014 · Spring Creek Correctional Center, Seward, Alaska

Germaine Gillespie, 29, was born and raised in Anchorage, the second oldest of five boys. He loved hairstyling, and his brother said he dreamed of owning a ranch in Arizona with horses and dogs where his family would gather. On June 29, 2014, officers found him unconscious in his segregation-unit cell at Spring Creek Correctional Complex in Seward, after a physical altercation with his cellmate, and he was pronounced dead at a Seward hospital. The Alaska Department of Corrections said he died from injuries sustained in the fight and classified the death as a homicide. His family has questioned why he and the cellmate were housed together.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). The Alaska Department of Corrections says the cellmate's altercation left him unconscious, and his family has questioned why the two men were housed together, given the cellmate's earlier serious injury of another prisoner.

Reported by: Alaska Department of Corrections (the agency that held him). The only account of how this person died comes from the agency that held him.
