George Stinney Jr.
George Stinney Jr. was 14 years old when South Carolina executed him in the electric chair in June 1944, one of the youngest people ever put to death in the United States. His sister Katherine Robinson remembers the time they spent together as children, and his sister Aime Ruffner held to the family's account of him for decades. The family consistently disputed the case that led to his death. In 2014 a county circuit judge ruled that he had been denied due process in those proceedings.
Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. His family maintained he was not involved in the killings, and he was 14 years old at execution; a county circuit judge later vacated the conviction, finding he had been denied due process.
Reported by: South Carolina state execution; county circuit judge; his family.
